TWB ANNOUNCEMENTS
1. May 2005 Workshop @ TWB Workshop on Tuesday, May 3
Post-Secondary Futures: a Workshop for Moms of Colour and their teens
With facilitator Kristine Maitland

Tuesday May 3rd from 6:30pm to 9:30pm
at Toronto Women’s Bookstore 73 Harbord St
Fee: $10 for one participant, $15 for a mom plus a teen
Wheelchair accessible.

Tuition and cost of living go up year after year, making it increasingly difficult for moms (with or without partners) to finance post-secondary education for their children. This is particularly true for moms of color, who often cannot find resources or, when they do, find that they do not fulfill the needs of their teens. This one-day workshop endeavours to provide mothers of colour with the tools and skills needed to help their teenage children get access to post-secondary educational funding and enrichment opportunities. Together, we will learn funding research strategies, develop application-writing skills, and discuss avenues of communication between parents and teens regarding their post-secondary futures, be it university, college, or apprenticeships. Further, we will look at avenues for young women of colour versus those of young men of colour. Reference materials will be provided. Teens are welcome to attend with their moms.

About the Facilitator: Kristine "Inez" Maitland has a reputation for being "in the know" partly as a result of 11 years of public and school library work experience. She has gone on to work in the education sector, where she has acted as a school Registrar and Academic Counselor. She currently provides support in the Admissions office at the University of Toronto Schools. She also maintains a Black History website www.kmaitland.ca

MONDAY MAY 3 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm @ TWB Fee: $10 for one participant, $15 for a mom plus a teen (No Refunds) Enrollment limited to 30 participants. This course is wheelchair accessible. Limited subsidies available. Presented by the Toronto Women’s Bookstore

4. Meniscus Productions presents:
Silent Slam: a write off
Featuring: Di Brandt, Kevin Connolly, Beatriz Hausner, Rosina Kazi, clifton joseph, Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, Jennifer LoveGrove, and Mariko Tamaki
Curator: Sandra Alland
Judges: ahdri zhina mandiela, Stuart Ross, and Priscila Uppal

For Silent Slam, we will focus on the live creation of the written word. The event will raise awareness of National Poetry Month, and raise money and awareness for Literature for Life, a non-profit literacy organization for teen mothers. Although a slam is a competition, Silent Slam will place more focus on the process than on who is “winning”. The main objective is for the audience to experience the often hidden world of creation. Two at a time, eight authors will spend ten minutes composing at a computer. Their poetry will be projected on the walls for the audience and judges to read as it is created.

Wednesday, April 6, 8 p.m. $7-$10 at the door
