Upcoming Book Launch for “Against The New Authoritarianism: Politics After Abu Ghraib”. by Henry A. Giroux
Co-sponsored by Arbeiter Ring Publishing.
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 30
From 7pm - 9pm at TWB
Food and refreshments provided.
In his latest book, Henry Giroux traces the U.S. descent into authoritarianism: the rise of a ruthless market fundamentalism, the growing militarization of everyday life, the corporate control of all elements of the dominant media, and an educational fundamentalism aimed at destroying any vestige of critical education as a foundation for an engaged citizenry and a vibrant democracy. Giroux examines the tragic events at Abu Ghraib and analyzes the conditions that made them possible, all the while trying to understand the role that education plays in creating violations of human rights that one largely attributes to authoritarian regimes. He describes the need for progressives to develop a language of hope as a condition forcritically engaged politics and the emergence of new social formations.
Henry A. Giroux is Global Television Network Chair in Communications at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He has written more than 300 articles and 40 books, has collaborated with Paulo Freire, Roger Simon, and Stanley Aronowitz, among others.
All welcome. Wheelchair Accessible. Free Admission.

Tapestry/Nightwood New Work Studio
The Cannery Building , Studio 315
55 Mill Street in the Distillery District
Admission PWYC

"Skim Takota is many different things. To her mother she's a klutz. To her best friend, she's a freak (more and more every day). To the popular girls at school, she's a nobody. And considering all the stuff that's going on in school - teen suicide and melodrama - maybe that's not surprising. Then there's Miss Archer, who sees Skim in the shadows, liberally applying too much eye makeup, full of possibility. This is the diary of Skim Takota."
