TWB Announcements:
1. In the aftermath of the devastation created by the Category 5 storm
Hurricane Ivan, Toronto Mayor David Miller, with Councillors Bas Balkissoon
and Michael Thompson, are urging City staff to join with other Toronto
and area residents to offer assistance to those in need in the Caribbean
countries hit by the hurricane.
In addition to the volunteer efforts of many of Toronto's communities,
the City of Toronto has set up donation bins across Toronto where
people can donate the following:

Non-perishable food items, Bottled water, water containers
-
Clothing , Baby supplies: diapers, formula, etc.
-
Medical supplies (such as over-the-counter medications
like aspirin and tylenol)
- Lanterns, flashlights, batteries, Sheets, pillows, pillowcases, beds/cots
- Tarpaulin, plastic sheeting, tents.
Donations can be made at these locations:
- Scarborough Civic Centre, 150 Borough Dr.
- · Etobicoke Civic Centre, 399 The West Mall
- North York Civic Centre, 5100 Yonge St.
- York Civic Centre, 2700 Eglinton Ave. W.
- East York Civic Centre, 850 Coxwell Ave.
- Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen St. W.
- Metro Hall, 55 John St.
- Toronto's 81 Fire Halls
- Toronto Emergency Medical Services Headquarters, 4330 Dufferin St.

Lastly, people can help by donating cash to the Canadian Red Cross.
Those wishing to make a financial donation can call 1-800-418-1111. See
www.redcross.ca for more information. Hurricane Ivan began on September
5 as a Category 4 hurricane but soon grew to become a Category 5 storm
(the highest possible), sustaining 225 kilometre an hour winds. People
have lost their lives, and homes and property have been destroyed. It
has affected Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, the Grenadines, Trinidad
and Tobago, Jamaica, Cuba, the Cayman Islands and Florida.

for a lecture on Thursday November 4 has unfortunately had to cancel due
to a scheduling conflict.

4. Margarita Aguilar Ruiz talks about: Politics Patriarchy Women Murder
and HIV/AIDS in Chiapas, Mexico and reads from her absorbing, painfully
beautiful and politically charged third work of fiction: With Faith Eroded

With Faith Eroded is one of the most profound literary voices to come
out of Mexico, a book which touches you in several places at the same
time. Margarita Aguilar Ruiz has worked in the State Programme for Prevention
and control of HIV/AIDS in the Health Institute of the State of Chiapas.
She has written several novels dealing with social problems and public
health: HIV/AIDS, violence against women, gender inequality, sexual and
reproductive rights, and respect for sexual diversity.
Also speaking will be:
Grahame Russell, co-director of Rights Action.
Barbara Williams, coordinator of Canadian Chiapanecas Justice for Women.
Susan Angelakis, translator of With Faith Eroded, is a Canadian who has
lived and taught English in Chiapas, Mexico for a number of years.

Chancellor Jackman Program for the Arts ( U of T) Presents:
The Literature of Africa and its Diaspora featuring Tayeb Salih, novelist,
short-story writer and broadcaster. Salih is the author of Seaons of Migration
to the North, a work described by Edward Said as one of the six finest
novels in modren Arabic literature. Salih’s publications include The Wedding
