NOTE about courses and workshops at TWB:
Enrollment for each session is limited to 15 participants. Pre-registration
is required. All courses and workshops are held on the first floor
of the store and are wheelchair accessible. We request that all participants
who attend our courses and workshops be scent- and fragrance-free.
We require payment in full at the time of registration to secure your
spot in the course or workshop. Please drop by the store to pay in
person or call us with a credit card number.

1. Wed Oct 6, 6:30pm to 9:30pm: Bisexuality: The Basics with Cheryl
Dobinson
This workshop will provide the opportunity for participants to learn
about bisexuality and bisexual issues. Together we will explore myths
and stereotypes about bisexuality, biphobia, different models of sexual
identity, and the wonderful diversity of bisexual lives. This workshop
is open to people of any and all sexual identities who want to learn
more about bisexuality.

2. Wed Oct 20, 6:30pm to 9:30pm: Cuban Feminist Literature with Clelia
Rodriguez .
This workshop is open to anyone who speaks Spanish and is interested
in Cuban Feminist Literature. Some of the readings are in Spanish
only and will not be translated into English. A reading package is
available to be picked up at TWB by all registered participants. All
participants are required to read the package prior to the workshop.
Some authors that are included in the reading package are: Dulce
María Loynaz, Reina María Rodríguez, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda,
Zoe Valdes and others

Instructor Cheryl Dobinson .
Monday evenings in November 6:30pm to 9pm
Mon Nov 8, 15, 22 and 29 .
This course will provide the opportunity for participants to learn
about bisexuality and bisexual issues. The course will combine information
sharing with interactive exercises and discussion in order to promote
different kinds of learning. This course is open to people of any
and all sexual identities who want to learn more about bisexuality.
Week 1 What does it mean to be bisexual?
Week 2 Identity and intimate relationships
Week 3 Being in community

Catching de Spirit: the use of African Spirituality in the Fiction
of African Writers
With instructor M. NourbeSe Philip .
Africans in both the Old and New Worlds have used spirituality,
African and non-African, not only to survive, but to enhance their
lives in the face of destructive forces such as colonialism and racism.
Catching de Spirit will explore this theme through works of literature
by African writers from Africa and the Afrospora. This course is open
to men and women of colour of African descent only.
Week 1--General introduction to African spirituality. Required reading--Nehanda
by Yvonne Vera.
Week 2--The role of Egungun-Ancestors. Required reading--Flickering
Shadows by Kwado Agymah Kamau
Week 3--Continuity and dis/continuity of African spirituality. Required
reading--The Salt Eaters by Toni Cade Bambara and The Wine of Astonishment
by Earl Lovelace.
Week 4--The role of the journey or quest and woman as keeper of secrets.
Required reading--Praise Song for a Widow by Paule Marshall.
M. NourbeSe Philip is a poet, essayist, novelist and playwright
who lives in the space-time of the City of Toronto. She has published
four books of poetry, one novel and three collections of essays. Her
work was recognized in 1995 by the Arts Foundation of Toronto Writing
and Publishing Award. In 1999 her play Coups and Calypsos was a Dora
Award finalist. .

open the world: radical women’s poetry from 1970s to now’ with Lean
Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarsinha, Tuesday nights in October from 6:30pm
to 9pm. (Tues Oct 5, 12, 19, 26) at TWB. Fee is $52. There are still

MediaWatch, Shari Graydon, provides some humour-inflected, teen-directed

8. Booklaunch of “Doing IT: Women Working in Information Technology”
(Sumach Press) by Krista Scott-Dixon.
Come and meet the author of this exciting new book that asks critical
questions about the so-called Information Revolution. Just how are
women faring in this much-hyped industry? Is women’s knowledge valued
in the knowledge economy? How can women IT professionals move ahead
in their careers so that they too shape and direct the future of information

9. CELEBRATING A LEGACY: A Teach-In on Institutional Ethnography
Institutional Ethnography (IE) is a method of social analysis developed
by feminist sociologist Dorothy E. Smith while she taught at the Ontario
Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) in Toronto. Are you interested
in learning this approach? Are you looking for an opportunity to refresh
or extend your existing knowledge? Are you looking to (re)connect
and converse with other people who are grounded in this tradition?
