An Important Message to the Many Valued Customers, Supporters, and Friends of The Toronto Women’s Bookstore:

It is with a mix of sadness and resignation that I inform you all that The Toronto Women’s Bookstore (TWB) will be closing on Friday, November 30th., 2012. Over the course of its illustrious 39 year history, the TWB has meant many things to many people. It was already steeped in those memories for me, when, two and a half years ago, I decided to try my hand at reviving and re-branding the TWB as the vibrant and viable centre for social justice and women’s issues that has defined its core values for almost four decades. For me and for many like me, it was always a safe, open and welcoming space where ideas were paramount, and where a community was given a voice. I’d like to think that in my relatively brief tenure as owner, I stayed true to the principles that defined this internationally renowned institution over the course of its history.

The fact is book markets have changed radically in the past few years. Ebooks, fierce online competition and a stagnant economy have all contributed to our business model becoming no longer sustainable. I’m closing the bookstore with the bittersweet knowledge that I did my best. I gave everything I had; physically, emotionally, and financially. I’ve learned a great deal about every aspect of the business and I have no regrets.

I’d like to take this opportunity to invite all friends, past and present, to a two day celebration of the TWB, wherein we will honour the legacy of this Toronto landmark. Details of this celebration will be made available as plans coalesce.

Thanks in advance to you all for your support and please spread the word to your friends and colleagues. It’s been a true pleasure working with the community these past few years and I hope to continue to enjoy the fruits of our acquaintance in all of my future endeavors.

Sincerely,
Victoria Moreno

This book pioneers radical new directions in human-environmental relationships. With 22 international contributors; over half of whom are either women, indigenous or from traditional cultures, this volume explores the power of indigenous and traditional peoples’ worldviews to critique and complement the approach of western style science. Organized into three sections – Head, Heart and Hand – this volume is a valuable resource for the scholar, student and practitioner.

Dr Lewis Williams, lead editor and contributor, is the Founding Director of K.I.N. (Koru International Network) HYPERLINK “http://www.kinincommon.com” kinincommon.com an emerging community of practice whose aim is to address ecological issues through the re-vitalization of indigenous worldviews in all cultures. Born in Aotearoa New Zealand, she is of Ngai Te Rangi (Maori) and Scottish origins. A previous Associate Professor, Native Studies, University of Saskatchewan, Lewis was responsible for hosting and organizing an international human ecology retreat in 2008 from which the Radical Human Ecology Project emerged. Today her international work with communities focuses on intercultural and intergenerational approaches to ecological well-being through holistic education and social action research. Her scholarship and activism are motivated by the radical change in the human condition we so deeply need at this time.
In the US, Australia and other countries around the world, many midwives have been arrested and charged. Many leading experts claim there’s an international witch-hunt against midwives. But this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to injustice and denial of women’s human and civil rights. As birth increasingly becomes seen as a “medical event”, so women have frequently been denied the right to decide the circumstances and location of where and how they give birth.

Now it’s time women took back those rights.

Our hope is that through watching this film, millions of women are empowered with the knowledge of precisely what they need to do to take back those rights, to take back childbirth. There is a promise of hope. This film will reveal something huge that could be the catalyst to revolutionise maternity systems worldwide but no-one knows about it….yet.
